Important Note for T32 Programs: Research Mentor Training (RMT)

Since the NIH has begun requiring evidence-based research mentor training (RMT) in its review criteria for T32 training grant applications, questions about what type and how much mentor training is needed have arisen.

The NIH mentor training requirements emphasize the competencies addressed in the evidence-based research mentor training curriculum, Entering Mentoring, developed by scholars at UW-Madison. Research using this curriculum indicates that at least four but ideally eight hours of training is optimal. Training is offered using this curriculum at no cost for STEMM faculty by WISCIENCE at UW-Madison in the Advancing Research Mentoring Practice (ARMP) program. We strongly recommend this training.

Alternatives to the ARMP program are available on and beyond campus. If training grant directors choose an alternative, they should confirm that the curriculum used is evidence-based and addresses the mentoring competencies outlined by the NIH.
